Assume Contact: The Defensive Mindset
There's a piece of field discipline that transfers cleanly from patrol to network: assume contact. Don't move as if the area is clear and be surprised when it isn't. Move as if contact is coming — spacing held, sectors covered, everyone knowing what they do when it starts — and nothing that happens is a surprise, only a scenario you've already rehearsed.
Applied to defense, it means this: stop designing for the day the perimeter holds. Design for the day it doesn't.
The wall is not the plan
Every defender wants a perimeter, and you should have one. But a perimeter is a delay, not a guarantee — and any plan whose first assumption is "the wall holds" has no second page. The defensive mindset asks the harder question at every design decision: if this layer fails, what does the next one see? If the answer is "nothing, because there is no next one," that's the finding. Not the breach itself — the brittleness. Assume contact, and brittleness becomes intolerable long before anyone tests it for you.
Least privilege is spacing
In the field you keep interval so that one burst can't take the whole column. Least privilege is the same math. Every account, every service, every process gets exactly the access its job requires and not one credential more — so that any single compromise buys an attacker one small room, not the building. It isn't distrust of your people or your software. It's refusing to let any one point of failure be load-bearing for everything. Tight spacing feels efficient right up until the day it's fatal.
Layers buy time, and time is the fight
No single defense has to be perfect. That's the entire liberating point of defense in depth. Each layer — segmentation, authentication, monitoring, backups — only has to slow things down and make noise. Slow and loud is a winning combination, because defense is ultimately a race: can you notice and respond faster than an intruder can find what they came for? Layers convert a sprint into a marathon that the side with home-field advantage should win.
Logs are institutional memory
The last principle is the least glamorous and the most valuable: write things down, and keep what you wrote.
- Logs turn "something feels off" into "here is what happened, in order."
- Logs from before an event are the baseline that makes the event visible at all.
- Logs outlive the person who was on watch that night. That's the difference between an organization that learns and one that just experiences things repeatedly.
A system that keeps no memory assumes, implicitly, that nothing bad will ever need reconstructing. That's the perimeter fantasy again, wearing different clothes.
Assume contact is not paranoia. Paranoia is fear without a plan. This is the opposite — a plan so settled that fear has nothing left to do. The perimeter may hold for years. Good. Every one of those quiet years, the watch that assumed otherwise was also the watch that kept its spacing, layered its defenses, and wrote everything down.
